Sandwiches, Selling, and You

I want you to imagine, for a moment, that you are having a conversation with someone, and they mention that they are “hungry.

Well, you just happen to have your lunch with you, and you reach in and whip out a sandwich for them!

No thank you,” says the other person.

But you said you were hungry! This sandwich is made from the freshest bread, amazing meats, and my own special recipe for the sauce! You’ll love it!” You tell the person out of disbelief.

No, its okay, I appreciate the offer, but I’m not interested,” they reply before checking their watch, realizing they have a meeting to attend, and then walk away after saying goodbye to you.

Well What the Heck just Happened!?!

Well let’s take a look at the events that occurred:

  1. They informed you they were hungry
  2. You offered them something to eat
  3. They said they weren’t interested in what you had to offer

Their loss right? Not quite.

You see, even though you KNOW they are hungry, and even though they had just TOLD YOU they were hungry…you just ASSUMED what you had to offer would be appealing to them.

Now don’t get me wrong, if you were to repeat the situation 100 different people, most likely SOME WOULD accept your offer…but it might be a low percentage of people…

So what went wrong in this situation?

Well several things could have caused them to decline your “sandwich“:

  • Do they eat meat? The sandwich contains meat and they might be a vegetarian…
  • Are they allergic to anything in the sandwich? Maybe they can’t eat sandwiches because of certain items they contain…
  • Do they trust YOU enough? The sandwich might give them a bad case of food poisoning for all they know…

The reason I bring up this odd example, is because many Offline Marketers have this very same approach to how they deal with local businesses in their areas!

They might meet a business owner, and the business owner might mention that they want to start marketing online…all of a sudden the marketer is offering “SEO,” “Video Marketing,” “Facebook Pages,” etc. as the solution to the business’ desire…

But then the business owner declines, or shows initial interest, and then stops returning phone calls or delaying getting together for a meeting!

The fact of the matter is that without asking enough questions about what exactly your clients WANT, you might THINK you are offering them something that is appealing to them…but be way off the mark!

So the next time you are meeting with clients, before you begin offering possible solutions, be sure you are asking the RIGHT QUESTIONS to make sure you give them EXACTLY what they want…and you’ll never have to worry about them declining you again!
